Three Keys to Starting An Online Business

August 10, 2008 by Derek Gehl · Leave a Comment

by Derek Gehl

Drive and enthusiasm is mandatory to start your own online business… but you also need to know what you’re doing… All the excitement you feel can make you want to jump in headfirst without testing the water.

Don’t jump!

Take a breath and look where you’re going… you’ll get there a lot faster.

Before you pay a web designer thousands of dollars… or create a product nobody wants… or waste any time and money on complicated software you don’t need… let’s start with the fundamentals.

1. Starting an Internet business means BUILDING the key components first… and that takes some elbow grease

Starting an Internet business takes time, motivation, and know-how. But when you put in the effort, the rewards can be everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Everything you’ve heard about starting your own business online is true: you can earn more money, have more free time, and spend your days doing something you love (and getting paid for it!).

However, don’t let your positive attitude get you roped into a shady business… don’t think you can just put up an “instant” website that someone sells you and instantly make a fortune. The only profits there are the ones you give to the con artist who sold you.

There’s no free ride.

But if you’re willing to learn and you know where to look for information, you’re already ahead of the crowd.

The truth is, there are more Internet business opportunities out there than any one person could possibly find, and some of them are perfect for YOU! You’ve got to be the one to find them!

2. Start your online business by giving the people what they want

I’ll let you in on the number one secret of Internet business: know what your customers want BEFORE you build your website.

I mean it! That one simple tip will save you more time and money than any other piece of advice. Don’t think of the Internet as another place for you to sell widgets - it’s so much more than that. (And it’s already crowded with widget shops!)

Search engines have made it possible to find anything online… if it’s there.

Your job is to find out what people are looking for - and not finding - that you can then sell them. If people are searching for left-handed bowling balls, then give them left-handed bowling balls.

Your goal is to find an underserved niche market and become the go-to guy before someone else does. And when you do that, you’ve got yourself a genuine Internet business!

3. Do it right the first time — get expert help

Experience is the best teacher, and that’s the way I learned the business. My company, The Internet Marketing Center, is built on the idea of trying something, learning from mistakes, and doing things better each time.

The problem is that you don’t have the time to try, try again… and frankly, all that failure is expensive! That’s why so much of what I do is trying to get people to learn from my mistakes instead of making your own.

It’s essential to arm yourself with information and knowledge. You can read articles and blogs, join a discussion forum where experts share information, or get your hands on online marketing courses, videos, and guides that teach you what you need to know.

You’ll need to know the basics of website building, writing salescopy, and search engine optimization. Without a plan and a little help, that could take a while.

The good news: if you’re willing to learn, you can find teaching tools and resources in every shape, size, and learning style. Whether you want everything you need in a book so you can learn at your own pace, or you’d prefer having a mentor looking over your shoulder every step of the way, it’s up to you to choose the method that suits you best.

When you start your own online business, it can be a fun and rewarding experience. And when those rewards are financial, it’s more than fun… it’s laughing all the way to the bank!

Looking for a Franchise Opportunity Close to Home?

Like most people you may be extremely tired of the daily commute to and from work and wouldn’t mind exploring a franchise opportunity near your home. There are numerous business franchises all over and they are seen as successful enterprises too. Consider some of the following options when locating a franchise that is the right fit for your area.

The ever-reliable Internet is the most convenient and quick way to search for franchise opportunities in your community. Another alternative is to be part of a mailing list that keeps people updated on new franchise opportunities and other local announcements in their newsletters.

When there are new property locations open to businesses you will most likely find a franchise fair or expo. It is recommended that you attend any of these events because you will get some helpful hints and that particular location may be a ‘hot spot’ for a new and upcoming business. Networking with other more experienced business people at these fairs will give you priceless information and knowledge about the franchise market.

At this point, you may have narrowed your choices down to a handful of potential franchises. Where do you go from there? The franchisees in your area, whether they’re in business now or if they’ve shut up shop, may help clarify a few things for you. The more franchisees and franchise owners you talk to the better. Don’t limit your discussions to one industry - remember there are lots of different types of franchise.

Let’s consider some of the benefits to opening a franchise in your community.

Socializing with your neighbors and other people in your community is a good idea especially since you may open a franchise. During all of these conversations you can find out what they like, how they spend their money and what service they feel their business district needs. This is very valuable information and somebody else outside of your community would not be as fortunate to get the inside scoop. In addition, it will most likely be your friends and neighbors who are your first customers even if it is just out of sheer curiosity or support of a new business entrepreneur. As you can see, if you were to open a franchise outside of your area then you would not be able to reap the rewards and will have to do a lot more work in order to gain that competitive edge.

What about the quality of your life? Environmentalists for urban and suburban sprawl often take City planners to task. The problem is that as a city’s population grows so too does the city. The advent of the automobile helped to overcome this problem, but a second problem emerged - rush hour traffic. Road networks have become congested, and people are finding they have to travel further and further, either spending longer hours behind the wheel or finding themselves at the mercy of the timetables of public transport, in order to earn salaries at places of employment many miles from their home.

An obvious benefit in setting up a local franchise is that you’ll be working in your area instead of the next town over. Even if you just want to check in daily to see how business is going, the benefits of a franchise close to home are clear.

Home BusinessesWhat To Beware Of

July 27, 2008 by David Gage · Leave a Comment

by David Gates

Home businesses are very attractive and viable sources of income. It is an excellent source for a person to supplement their income just by working weekly from the comfort of their home. Many entrepreneurs have thrived on such business. But as roses are accompanied by thorns so are these. Scams concerning home business are rampant these days.

As this is a sought after source of income various scams have cropped up. People set up false ways to earn money sitting at home, to lure innocent people into paying for stuff and services which end up being useless or nonexistent. And in turn they get rich.

The most popular home business scams for years have been the promise of people earning money by stuffing envelopes and mailing them out on someone’s behalf. These services promise that if you purchase materials and send their materials out that you will receive a payment per envelope or per response, typically advertised as being a promise of one dollar per envelope earnings. In reality, these scams involve the mailing of fliers that tell other people to send the original outfit money for materials to do this type of work themselves, leaving you out of the monetary exchange loop altogether.

Many people are these days lured into scams by promising them that buying so and so accounting or billing software will get them outsourced work from establishments like hospitals. The scammers even give out list of prospective clients for a fee.

The medical coding business scams are not only expensive to get into - with much of the software costing hundreds of dollars - but can also be an illegal activity in some areas. Many jurisdictions require medical coding and billing outfits and individuals to be trained in an accredited program and have a license with agencies to do this work. Plus, many medical outfits use businesses that can process large amounts of data more efficiently than an individual. In these cases, the individual that purchases the software has literally done just that, with no prospect of using it to make money.

A third scam involving work from home businesses is the promise of work at home building of kits or other crafts that can then be resold by the business with the promise of you being paid for every kit assembled. While this seems like a little more work than is expected, this scam is also one that baits you into purchasing something with no hopes of recovering your money. Most outfits will reject your assembled kits as inferior no matter the quality of assembly, which means you won’t be paid and your money to purchase the kits is down the drain, not to mention all the time you put into the assembly.

Data entry scams are currently the most popular and growing home business scams. Sitting at home filling out forms and spreadsheets in hope of earning money but ending up having wasted time is one of the most common results of such a venture. Though there are genuine data entry firms but such are hard to find. Also your work is often rejected citing poor quality and you receive no money.

So the person seeking a viable home business will have to do his own homework regarding which company is legitimate and which is not. But one thing is sure, even if you are working from the comfort of your home you will have to work hard.

What Not To Sell On eBay - Home Business

July 24, 2008 by Thomas Griffin · Leave a Comment

by Thomas Griffin

1. Items under $10 It sounds like a great idea - after all, everyone likes a bargain don’t they? But items that sell for under $10 have one big problem: Shipping. It’s quite likely that the shipping for the item will cost more than the item itself and this can be very off-putting to buyers. For example, if the item costs $4.50 and shipping costs $6, the total cost for the item is $10.50. If the buyer can purchase the item at their local store for $8, then this suddenly becomes a much better deal. For small items and accessories, the way to get around this problem is by grouping the items together, such as sets of 6 golf-balls or 5 tea towels.

2. Products everyone else are selling Many sellers think that the best way to get started on eBay is to sell items that everyone else is selling. Surely those super hot items such as ipods, cell phones, psps and so on will be a quick route to riches? Well, no. The sellers who are already selling these items are not only more established on eBay - and thus familiar to and trusted by buyers - but they will be able to buy wholesale stock in larger bulks lots than you will, so their prices will always be better. Thus it will almost certainly be very difficult for you to make a profit in a market that is already well supplied.

3. Things you love…but no-one else does Hobbies can be a great way of making money, but only if plenty of other people are interested in them too. Another scenario is when you find a product that you think is absolutely wonderful and could be the next best thing…but no-one seems interested in buying it. Oh well you think, it’s only short term, eventually they’ll learn about my item and start flocking to buy it. Ah, no they won’t. It’s lonely work trying to educate people on the benefits of a product all on your own. As fabulous as the product might be, it’s nigh-on impossible to start a trend on your own. To make money from a trend, you need magazines and newspapers, word of mouth and television to do some of the work for you.

4. Difficult items to ship - e.g. fragile china and plants Now I’m not saying that these are bad items to sell altogether. Many sellers do very well from these items. But I don’t suggest you sell such difficult items when you are first starting out. Both these items have an above-average shipping risk, particularly if not packed properly. As a new seller, any negative feedback you receive at this early stage could be especially damaging to your career.

5. Very large items Thinking of starting with furniture or pianos? Unless you already have experience selling and shipping these items, then it might be wise to start with something smaller. Shipping such large items is a major operation. Not only that, these items will sell less often than mid-priced items as they won’t attract the same number of impulse buyers.

Know the Different Types of Franchise Business Opportunities

July 23, 2008 by Franco Andretti · Leave a Comment

by Franco Andretti

With the research that you may have already done, you probably realize that there are different types of franchise opportunities to invest in. There is a lot for you to learn in order for you to be educated in this type of industry. When it is finally time for you to commit to a franchise, you will want to feel secure about your choice and know that you have protected yourself against a bad business decision. It is in your best interest to know all you can about the difference types of franchise opportunities.

There are two main categories when referring to franchise opportunities. These are product and trade name franchising and business format franchising.

Product and trade name franchises are the big blue chip industries such as soft drinks or beverages, automobiles and gas companies. In this situation, the large organizations supply the merchandise, logo and trademarks. In addition, they are responsible for the advertising. The franchisee do not pay royalties on the sales and is there to sell the products or service supplied by the franchiser. In order to have everything needed to run a successful franchise, the franchiser helps with the set up, scouts out a lucrative location and supplies anything else required to run the business.

Business format franchising, as the name suggests, is a method of doing business and involves services provided to the franchisee. The use of trademarks and logos is integral to the concept of business format franchising. The franchisee assists in the selection of a site, and the franchiser will have a hand in the design and layout of the business.

Did you know that the color on the walls of a dine-in fast food restaurant dictate how fast people eat their meal? Therefore, due to these studies, the franchisers find it imperative to be involved even at this level of the decision making process. They will also dictate the advertising methods, training and the philosophy or mindset that the employees must possess.

Some common examples are fast food chains, real estate agencies, convenience stores as well as recruitment agencies.

There may be a fee that the franchisee will have to pay up front and it is referred to as the start up costs. Additional payments are the royalties for the continual support of the franchiser.

Whichever type of franchise you feel is best, you have to consider how good a salesperson you are and which area you feel you’d be best suited to. Remember, the popularity of a brand name may not translate into immediate success. Franchising may be a great business opportunity, but you should choose your franchise wisely.
