Search Engine Optimization For Everyday Folks
September 9, 2008
One of the best ways to get instant traffic to a web site is to pay the search engines to get listed, using “pay per click” advertising.
Of course, the better your pages are, the more likely the search engines will list them for free, and let people click all day without charging you a penny.
Google has this thing called a quality score, which is measured by something called Page Rank. Not even Larry Page knows how it is calculated, but I can show you some simple steps you can take to get higher search engine results and higher Page Rank.
Interested? Lets get into the simple seo stuff you can do to get higher rankings, better Page Rank, and all that stuff.
1. Get links pointing to your site with rich keyword anchors.
I mean, do stuff to get other sites to point to your site, using a link phrase that people actually search for.
One way to do this is with article marketing (see my other articles). You simply write a short informative article, include an author box with a hyperlink back to your website, using a keyword you know people search for. Then you submit this article to many article directories.
2. Put your keyword in your title tag.
The title tag is what you read at the very very top left of your browser. Make sure your keyword shows up there.
3. Put your keyword in your headline.
Your headline is the big text at the top of your page (normally). Your keyword should be in your headline.
4. Put related keywords on your page.
This means your page should be meaningful, and contain related words to whatever you are discussing.
5. Remove the programming jargon from your main html file.
Get the programming mumbo jumbo out of your html files, and put it in another file. Things like javascript and “css” mess up the search engine spiders that come and index your pages, so put that stuff on other files, and include it in one small line of code. That way, there is no chance of messing up the bots when the come to visit.
6. Use fully qualified links to internal pages.
This is quite easy, and just means of linking to the HTML page, you link to it like it was on another site, using the fully qualified domain name (that http colon slash slash stuff). When you do this, the search engines know that these other pages are worth indexing too.
7. Maintain your site.
By keeping things new on your website, it means you have active dynamic content, which the search engines love. So keep things maintained and updated, and your rankings in the “SERPS” will rise steadily.
Try these tips out, and watch your search engine results rise higher and higher. It is simple when you know what to do.
